As 2022 comes to an end, our team at NACCHO wanted to review our progress this year and the digital resources that have been shared with our members.
Often times these resources, such as tools and reports, are shared in newsletters, blogs, and social media -- but with so much information coming out at any given time, it can be easy to miss a resource or two.
To help ensure that you didn’t miss a beat this year, we’ve pulled these resources into the following guide:
Model Practices and Innovative Practices
Our Model Practices and Innovative Practices Programs recognize the achievements of health departments across the country. When the winners are announced, NACCHO publishes an online database of all the winning submissions as well as a database of video overviews of Model Practice programs.
This year, the following projects were viewed hundreds of times.
- Effective enforcement of COVID-19 mandatory mask requirements in indoor public places (Washington County Department of Health and Human Services)
- Leveraging Community Health Workers to Improve COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine Protocol Adherence (Fairfax County Health Department)
- Public Health as a Team Sport: COVID-19 Community Response and Equity Coalition (San Antonio Metropolitan Health District)
Most Popular Publications
NACCHO has an online repository called Publications where members can log in with their MyNACCHO accounts to download large reports and NACCHO Exchange newsletters.
The MAPP User’s Handbook and Advancing Public Narrative for Health Equity reports have been popular for the past several years, but the NACCHO Exchange and Seven Health Department Strategies are new popular resources.
- [NEW] NACCHO Exchange: Winter 2022
- MAPP User’s Handbook
- Advancing Public Narrative for Health Equity and Social Justice
- [NEW] Seven Health Department Strategies for Implementing Health in All Policies to Prepare for Health Impacts of Climate Change
Most Popular Tools
In addition to Publications, NACCHO also has an online repository called Toolbox for members to upload important resources to share with each other. This helps so that local health departments don’t have to reinvent the wheel to create new resources, such as tools for performance improvement, epidemiology plans, etc.
The Public Health Logo has been a staple since its release several years ago; the purpose of this tool is to help unite local health departments under the same logo. The Joy in Work Toolkit was released a few months ago and has been a popular workforce resource.
- Public Health Logo
- Tools and Templates: Guide to Communicating about Performance Improvement
- [NEW] The Joy in Work Toolkit
- PPHR Communications Training Example
- Epidemiology Plan Example - Pima County
NACCHO University
NACCHO University is NACCHO’s online education and training portal. There are dozens of courses related to public health available for anyone with a free MyNACCHO account. Most of our popular courses have been around for a few years, but a new health equity course has been making headway.
- Good Decision Making in Real Time: Practical Public Health Ethics for Local Health Officials
- Health and Disability 101 Training for Health Department Employees
- [NEW] Health Equity in the Response to Drug Overdose Training
- Opportunities for Hospital and Local Health Department Collaboration for Community Health Assessment and Improvement Planning
YouTube Videos
Many important webinars and first-person stories are uploaded to NACCHO’s YouTube channel. This year NACCHO embarked on several new projects and used video to highlight some of the key deliverables of the projects as well as lessons learned from our members.
- [NEW] Infection Prevention and Control in a County Jail, Non-traditional Long-Term Care Facilities, and Foster Homes (This video was part of the Building Local Operational Capacity for COVID-19 series)
- [NEW] Introducing Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support Blueprint (This video was part of the Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support project)
- Unpacking Barriers and Facilitators to Exclusively Breastfeed at Hospital Discharge Webinar (Webinar originally published in August 2020)
Research Information
NACCHO released the 2019 Profile report in August 2020. It gave invaluable information on local health department governance, leadership, workforce, and much more. The data for the 2019 Profile has continued to be used in 2022.
New Resources
These two projects were new this year. They didn’t pull in any big numbers, but they performed well within their respective workgroups.
- [NEW] STD registry: An online database of sexually transmitted disease clinics in the US.
- [NEW] Suicide, Overdose, and Adverse Childhood Experiences Toolkit: A resource hub with links to more information for local health departments.
Program Webpages
Of our more than 90 different programs at NACCHO, we had 3 program webpages that stood out in Google Analytics. These pages are filled with more resources on these topics as well as ways to connect with our program teams.
- Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships: Our community-driven strategic planning process for improving community health.
- Community Health Assessment and Improvement Planning: A resource hub with guides on CHA best practices.
- Health Equity and Social Justice: This page contains resources, training materials, and recommended reading for health equity and public health issues.
Finally, a personal favorite, if you haven’t read past president Jennifer Kertanis’s poem “A Powerful Force” on how her local health department was impacted by COVID -- I highly recommend reading it to close out your year.
