Members: Karla Black (Grand Rapids, MI), Melissa Marquis (Hartford, CT), Mac McClendon (Harris County, TX), Suzet McKinney (Chicago, IL), Liz Ticer (Olathe, KS)

This two day conference, hosted by the National Healthcare Coalition Resource Center, brought together healthcare coalition stakeholders from around the United States to share best practices and strengthen the future of healthcare coalitions. The first keynote speaker was Mr. Richard Reed, Senior Vice President of Disaster Cycle Service for the American Red Cross, who discussed the development and execution of programs that help Americans prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters nationwide. On the second day the conference featured Pulitzer Prize winner Dr. Sheri Fink, the author of the recent book, Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital, who shared the “Promise and Perils of Crisis Standards of Care” along with Dr. Dan Hanfling from the Institute of Medicine’s Crisis Standards of Care Committee. The conference also included lessons learned from coalition responses to the West, Texas fertilizer explosion and the Boston Marathon bombing. Additionally, the conference included breakout sessions on topics such as building coalition resilience, the challenges of building coalitions in rural and frontier regions, the impact of the Affordable Care Act on coalitions, the operationalization of the Crisis Standards of Care, how PHEP and HPP coordination can help build coalitions, and how coalitions can enhance response activities.

NACCHO and ASTHO presented a poster at the conference detailing the characteristics of state and local health department involvement in healthcare coalitions.
