The Fenway Institute released a new report that outlines considerations for working with people who are incarcerated and identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI), or gender non-conforming. The report outlines recommendations on a range of topics with an emphasis on cultural competency while working with LGBTI populations.

One component of the report is medical care and guidelines for treating LGBTI patients who have Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Though HCV is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, certain types of sex or sex between HIV-infected partners may increase someone’s risk of HCV transmission during sex. In particular, men who have sex with men (MSM) are at an increased risk of transmission of HCV sexually.
