Counterfeit N95 respirators that do not meet U.S. safety standards pose a risk to healthcare professionals, as they may not provide adequate respiratory protection against the novel coronavirus. In early 2021, more than 11 million counterfeit 3M N95 masks were seized by the Department of Homeland Security. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) has been a critical strategy in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The American Medical Association (AMA) released a video on how to identify and select NIOSH-approved N95 respirators vs. counterfeit N95s.
