The Risk Communication and Information Sharing Workgroup held its November call on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 1 PM Eastern Time. Ten workgroup members participated in the call. The group discussed the role of public health communicators during disasters and emergencies with a NACCHO policy scholar who will be taking the lead to research and write the workgroup’s next policy statement on communications capacity at local health departments.
The group also spent some time discussing the various challenges that their local health departments have faced regarding Ebola. Specifically, NACCHO staff from the Flu on Call project were on the call to learn more about how workgroup members were contributing to hotlines for Ebola. Workgroup members also discussed communication efforts to combat health equity, discrimination, and stigmatization issues that have developed in their communities.
The workgroup’s policy statement on Social Media Use for Risk Communications was ratified by NACCHO’s board and published on NACCHO’s website in November.
The next workgroup call will take place on Tuesday, December 2 at 1 PM Eastern Time.
