A 2015 study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases conducted a review of current literature on partner services programs with the goal of informing STD prevention programs. Partner service programs have been a mainstay of public health STD prevention for decades. The study found that value is maximized by balancing a portfolio of patient and provider referral interventions and by blending partner notification interventions with other STD prevention interventions in overall partner services program structure.
