There are over 105,000 private pools and over 5,000 public pools, including apartments, in the Las Vegas Valley. In 1994, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) began tracking submersion incidents, or near-drownings, of children under 14 years of age. Data from 1994 - 1998 revealed Clark County had a drowning rate of children 4 years or younger (9.2 per 100,000) that is three times the national average (3.03 per 100,000). The submersion incident rate for children 14 years old and younger was 21.36 per 100,000.
