Webinar Recording: Mumps in U.S. Detention Facilities

Since September 2018, there have been greater than 800 mumps cases in adult migrants detained in U.S. detention facilities who are under the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Effective public health interventions in this setting require understanding of facility and custody operations, which often involve multiple entities with authority for operations and detainee custody. Local health departments are on the front lines of public health in providing vaccination services and conducting prevention and control activities to reduce the heath risks and spread of mumps. Local health departments are valuable partners in collaborating with stakeholders to develop appropriate interventions based on the local epidemiology and specific needs of each facility.

The Mumps in Detention Centers webinar featured the federal and local perspectives, and speakers discussed the current landscape of mumps outbreaks in U.S. detention facilities, the complex operations for managing custody of detainees in detention facilities, the important roles of local, state and federal partners in responding to outbreaks in detention facilities, and resources to assist with response efforts.
