Local health departments (LHDs) are critical in responding to public health emergencies. These institutions formed the backbone of the COVID-19 response and have also responded to infectious disease threats such as Zika, influenza outbreaks, congenital syphilis, and RSV.
On July 27, the Senate Appropriations Committee considered the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) spending bill, which passed out of committee on a bipartisan vote of 26-2.
On May 11, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a legislative hearing entitled, "Preparing for and Responding to Future Public Health Security Threats."
