San Juan Basin Public Health's conclusions demonstrate the importance of holistic climate planning that takes seriously the impacts of climate change to the entire public health system.
With the climate changing quickly, emergency planning for extreme weather events is critically important to public health. This project involved creating and delivering an extreme heat tabletop exercise to assist local planning efforts.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted what we already know to be true: higher-risk populations are especially vulnerable to public health threats and emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic magnified higher-risk populations are exceptionally vulnerable to public health threats and emergencies.
The Virginia Department of Health developed COVID-19 Regional Surge Teams to augment capacity to the local health districts (LHDs) by providing highly qualified staff to assist with case investigations and contact tracing (CI/CT) and additional public health projects. This model enabled a flexible, highly competent, regionally managed response team that was adaptable to local needs.
