CDC Releases Updated Public Health Emergency Preparedness Capabilities for State and Local Public Health

Oct 30, 2018 | Katie Dwyer

On October 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the 2018 Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Capabilities: National Standards for State, Local, Tribal and Territorial Public Health. CDC originally published the 15 capabilities in 2011, and has been working with other federal agencies, state and local public health agencies, and national partners including NACCHO to update the capabilities.

The 15 capabilities remain the same; the goal of the update was to streamline language and align content with current public health priorities and strategies. There is an intentional focus on pandemic influenza planning, environmental health, at-risk populations, and tribal populations throughout the document. There is also increased emphasis on defining the public health role in each capability and identifying core partners.

CDC is integrating the updated capabilities into the notice of funding opportunity for the 2019-2024 Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement period of performance. For more information, you can contact NACCHO at [email protected] or visit CDC’s website: https://www.cdc.gov/cpr/readiness/capabilities.htm.
