Developed by Equity Matters, this presentation entitled "Civic Engagement Using Social Determinants Data: Creating Opportunities for Health in Baltimore" describes health inequities in the Baltimore, explains reasons for those inequities, and then describes how policies that affect health are not consistently reviewed for their impact on health outcomes. It provides specific data on the number of Baltimore policies such as new liquor store classification and placement requirements that affect health, safety, and health determinants that were reviewed by the Baltimore City Health Department. It finishes with what next steps the community can take to improve how policies are developed and implemented so that they consider health. This presentation can serve as a guide to other local jurisdictions who are seeking to advance HiAP. It provides an example of how local jurisdictions can provide concrete and locally relevant examples of how policies are made at the local level, how they affect health, and how frequently health is considered. While this approach may not be appropriate in every venue, providing examples of local policies that have been considered and/or implemented impact can be a powerful way to demonstrate why HiAP is important.
