Comprehensive plans are long-term plans regarding the land use planning and design of a community. Several local governments across the country have used several strategies to plan for health. APA conducted a two-part project to survey and evaluate this practice nationally. APA developed a national, web-based survey. The national survey report reviews these findings and identifies opportunities and barriers that communities face in the development and adopting of policies that include public health considerations in planning decisions. The second report is on an evaluation of 22 comprehensive and sustainability plans. This report also highlights the strengths and weaknesses in addressing public health and examples of robust policies from across the group of plans that promote health in their communities.
