This resource was developed by the Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) program and provides a searchable database of independent living organizations across the nation. When reaching out to and developing partnerships with local disability organizations in the community, a Center for Independent Living (CIL) is a good place to start, as CILs are generally the most knowledgeable about people with disabilities, services, resources, and recommendations for disability inclusion in any given community. The term "center for independent living" means a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonprofit agency that provides an array of independent living services. CILs are based on a "for us, by us" concept, and are designed and operated by individuals with disabilities in the local community. CILs often provide services that can support LHDs in their disability inclusion efforts, including lending expertise, conducting accessibility evaluations, providing communication services, or providing staff trainings. Accessibility: This website is generally accessible using a screen reader, but navigation may be confusing. Information is provided both in interactive map and list form.
