Emergency response to a natural disaster, such as flooding, is often spontaneous and focused on saving as many lives and as much property and infrastructure as possible. In collaboration, Illinois Department of Public Health and Lawrence Countys Emergency Management Agency developed maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology as tools for evaluation, situational awareness, and early community notification for flooding emergencies. The addition of GIS-based visual awareness gives the emergency response team the ability to target future response efforts based on key community data and to identify trends as events unfold.
