Forty U.S. Communities Awarded “ACHIEVE” Grants to Find Local Solutions to Improve Health Washington, DC (February 7, 2011) ACHIEVE is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Healthy Communities Program. The 2011 ACHIEVE communities will build on the successes of existing ACHIEVE communities from 2008–2010. These ACHIEVE communities have demonstrated success in making local improvements like working with city planners to install bicycle lanes to encourage biking to school; creating tobacco free parks; and sponsoring farmers markets to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables. “The CDC is pleased to work alongside and support the efforts of the ACHIEVE national partners to make sustainable and positive community changes to establish healthy environments” said Dr. Wayne Giles, Director, CDC’s Division of Adult and Community Health. “Promoting healthier lifestyles and supporting healthy communities will help us change the landscape in our nation and focus on improving the health of all people. Through community action and our partnerships we can create momentum that assists people in making healthy choices where they live, work, and play.” The five national organizations involved in ACHIEVE—National Association of County and City Health Officials, National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, National Recreation and Park Association, the YMCA of the USA, and the Society for Public Health Education—are able to leverage each other’s assets and expertise in providing support to the 40 selected communities. This network enables these communities to have access to innovative ideas, strategies, and solutions, which allow these communities with opportunities to tap into each of the national organizations strengths, while at the same time creating a larger mobilized movement to make healthier places. A complete listing of funded communities appears below, as well as on the ACHIEVE website at www.achievecommunities.org and CDC’s Healthy Communities Program’s website at www.cdc.gov/healthycommunitiesprogram.
