Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: SC Dept of Health and Environmental Control
State: SC
Date Added: 11/12/2009
Themes: Communications - Priority Groups
Issue Summary: SC DHEC Region 8 Encourages Hispanic Population to be Vaccinated
Description of Issue(s): We received a call from the president of the local latin radio station. She stated while visiting a church in the area she noticed so many members were sick or out with ILI. As she talked with people there she realized that most of them were misinformed about vaccinations and how germs are spread.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): She invited us to the station to share the truth about the flu vaccine and information about how to help prevent the spread of germs.

Region 8 participated in an on-air interview segment during the noon "Lunch Rush." Listeners were encouraged to receive their seasonal flu vaccination and the H1N1 vaccine if they were in the target groups, and asked to stay tuned to local media to find out when the vaccine would be offered to everyone. Parents were informed about the upcoming school clinics and told to be on the look out for consent forms to have their children vaccinated at school.

This was an ideal way to ensure parents understood the paperwork being sent home by the school on behalf of DHEC.

Listeners were also encouraged to protect themselves against and prevent the spread of germs.

Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: As a possible result of this broadcast, more people in our Spanish speaking community may have received the seasonal flu shot and those in the target groups including school aged children may have had or are eagerly awaiting the H1N1 vaccine.
