According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, injury is the leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults. More than 150,000 people die each year as a result of injuries from motor vehicle crashes, fires, drownings, falls, and poisonings (including suicide and homicide). Local health departments play an important role in injury prevention efforts, as they are visible entities in their communities and have established relationships with other local organizations, citizens, and the media. BuckleUpBoston! (BUB) is a child passenger safety program (CPS) coordinated by the Boston Public Health Commission’s Childhood Injury Prevention Program (CIPP). BUB is an important resource for low-income families in Boston who need a child safety seat. Every year BUB protects over 1,600 low-income children by providing their families with a free or low-cost car safety seat and training on correct use. More »

 
 

Injury Prevention Toolkit Now Available!

The Toolbox is an online clearinghouse of available resources to help local public health practitioners. Tools are produced by local, state, and federal agencies, as well as academic institutions and other stakeholders. Resources can be searched by type of tool, geographic location and content area.
NACCHO is currently enhancing the Toolbox to include materials specific to Injury Prevention.

NACCHO and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials sponsor a monthly series of topical injury prevention teleconference seminars. These calls highlight emerging issues in injury prevention and model programs that address them. Participants first receive an overview of the issue, including a discussion of definitions, examples, prevalence, and federal initiatives. Following this introduction, experts from state and local agencies share effective and innovative prevention efforts currently under way throughout the country.
