Planning for the Marathon, Not the Sprint: Building Disaster Mental Health Recovery into Preparedness Planning
The impacts of a disaster are complex, long-lasting, and require public health responses on multiple levels. Residents often battle symptoms of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, which can reverberate into other parts of the community. These effects can continue long after the initial response is over, so long-term interagency cooperation is critical to a community’s mental health recovery.
At the Preparedness Summit‘s closing plenary, Steven Moskowitz from the New York State Office of Mental Health and Dr. Ben Springgate and Kelly Suter from the International Medical Corps will highlight successful programs that have built behavioral health recovery initiatives into their planning efforts. The speakers will discuss their experiences in mental health recovery during the Ebola response, Hurricane Katrina and Sandy recoveries, and active shooter events.
