CDC releases 2013-2014 Snapshot of Public Health Preparedness

Jan 30, 2014 | Frances Bevington

The CDC released the annual report for its Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) cooperative agreement, which provides 50 states, 4 localities, and 8 insular areas with funding to achieve 15 public health preparedness capabilities for state and local preparedness. The 2013-2014 National Snapshot of Public Health Preparedness, highlights PHEP awardees and documents progress related to 3 of the 15 preparedness capabilities: public health laboratory testing, emergency operations coordination, and emergency public information and warning. The report includes, details about PHEP funding, fact sheets on the awardees, information about Technical Assistance Review scores, and CDC resources that supported preparedness activities. Activities in the report showcase the following CDC priorities: improving health security at home and around the world; better preventing the leading causes of illness, injury, disability, and death; and strengthening public health through collaboration with healthcare. One detail that may be of interest to local health departments is listed on page nine of the report:

“Nearly 4,000 state and local public health preparedness staff positions nationwide were funded by the PHEP cooperative agreement during 2012.”
