In Andrews County, preparing for the new school year goes beyond just school supplies; it’s about protecting our children’s health. Our community faces unique challenges around vaccine access and awareness, with some families hesitant about immunizations and others facing barriers like language and information gaps.

To address these challenges, our health department hosts a newly annual Back to School Bash, a family-friendly event designed to promote childhood vaccination and provide free health resources and school supplies. This event brought together parents, students, school staff, and local partners in a fun, engaging environment.

A key feature of the Bash was the involvement of dedicated medical student volunteers. These students assisted with planning and played an important role during the event by providing vaccine education, answering questions, dispelling myths, and helping administer vaccines. Their knowledge and approachable presence helped make vaccine information more relatable and trustworthy for families and attendees.

During the event, attendees had access to free MMR and other routine vaccines, health screenings, educational booths, and prize giveaways. Local barbers generously provided free haircuts for children who received vaccinations, adding a fun and valuable incentive. Flyers and social media posts were created in both English and Spanish to reach diverse families. The event also featured a raffle contest to encourage participation, with prizes donated by community businesses.

A little over 200 community members attended the Bash, with a generous number of vaccines administered onsite. Feedback showed increased awareness and willingness among parents to vaccinate their children on time. The medical student volunteers expressed pride in their role, sharing how their presence helped build trust and effectively address fears and misinformation about vaccines within the community.

The success of the Back to School Bash demonstrates the power of community collaboration and youth engagement. By creating a welcoming space that combines education with fun, we’re helping ensure a healthier school year for all children in Andrews.

Moving forward, our health department is committed to continuing the Back to School Bash as an annual event to ensure ongoing access to MMR and other routine vaccinations, especially considering the recent measles outbreak near our county. We aim to strengthen outreach efforts, particularly in underserved areas, and continue partnering with local schools and community organizations to keep families informed, protected, and prepared for the school year.
