The World Health Organization defines healthy aging as a continuous process of optimizing opportunities to maintain and improve physical and mental health, independence, and quality of life throughout the life course. Supporting healthy aging on a national and international scale includes developing effective public policy, cultivating age-friendly environments, aligning health systems to respond to older adults’ needs, creating equitable care systems, and improving assessment on aging. Much of the effective work around healthy aging takes a community-wide approach, exploring the impact of social determinants of health and how the environments in which people live contribute to their opportunity for health.
