NACCHO Releases Interactive Dashboard of Local Health Department Infrastructure and Practice

Washington, DC, November 9, 2020 —The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), representing the country’s nearly 3,000 local health departments, in partnership with ZS, is proud to announce the release of the NACCHO Profile Dashboard, an interactive web resource to share and view results from the 2019 National Profile of Local Health Departments (Profile) study. The Profile study represents the largest, most reliable data source on local health departments.

This dashboard marks the first time NACCHO has shared Profile data in an interactive format. It presents data about and from local health departments to illustrate the workforce, financial capacity, and activities of local public health. Local health officials, researchers, policymakers, and the general public can explore this website and generate customized and filtered data visualizations. Any user can view data related to selected demographic filters, while staff at local health departments with available data can log on and dynamically compare their own responses benchmarked against peer and other groups.

Topics presented in the Profile Dashboard mimic chapters of the 2019 Profile Study Report, which include the following:

  • Partnerships and Collaborations
  • Top Executive Characteristics
  • Workforce Composition
  • Revenue Sources
  • Budget Trends
  • Programs and Services Provided
  • Actions to Implement a Community Health Improvement Plan
  • Public Health Policy Involvement
  • Communication Channel Usage
  • PHAB Accreditation Engagement
  • Emergency Preparedness Budgets

“This level of customization and fidelity enhances the versatility of Profile data used by practitioners and policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels and their understanding of how local health departments improve and protect the health of local communities,” said Lori Tremmel Freeman, NACCHO’s Chief Executive Officer. “Local health departments are the backbone of the country’s public health system as the ‘boots on the ground’ for delivery of public health services. With data from the Profile Dashboard, the public health community can better prevent and combat disease and health inequities and make sound decisions to improve and enhance the physical and mental health of every individual.”

ZS, a global professional services firm, partnered with NACCHO on a pro bono basis to develop and design the dashboard. “We are honored to partner with NACCHO to bring the interactive Profile Dashboard to life,” said Natalie Hanson, ZS Principal. “Local health departments are the cornerstone of communities and provide a window into public health needs. The Dashboard will present the Profile Study data in a visual, dynamic way, allowing local health departments and policymakers to better understand the data and uncover new insights.”
