Representatives from the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) convened their joint policy work group on August 12 in Raleigh, NC. The overarching purpose of the work group is to discuss and identify opportunities to strengthen the partnerships between emergency management and public health. Some of the issues discussed were the various requirements and funding mechanisms of Federal grants programs such as CDC’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness program, ASPR’s Hospital Preparedness Program, and FEMA’s Homeland Security Grant program. Other issues discussed were an ongoing initiative to develop public health mission ready packages that could be included as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.
