NACCHO hosted two 90‑minute interactive workshops focused on practical strategies to strengthen surveillance and informatics infrastructure within local public health agencies (PHAs). This workshop will demonstrate how local health departments (LHDs) can use the CDC Foundation’s WAI Public Health Agency Information Infrastructure Maturity Model to assess current systems, identify priority improvements, and accelerate progress toward milestones.
Participants will learn about the maturity model and explore how it can be used as a planning, assessment, and communication tool across different agency sizes and levels of capacity.
Session focus by date:
- April 21 (3:00–4:30 PM ET): This session focuses on the needs and experiences of large LHDs, with discussion centered on applying the maturity model in complex, multi‑program environments and using it to support planning and modernization efforts. View the recording and slides.
- May 21 (1:00–2:30 PM ET): This session focuses on small and medium LHDs, emphasizing practical, flexible approaches to assessing information systems capacity, identifying achievable next steps, and making incremental progress with limited resources. View the recording and slides.
What you’ll learn:
- Applying the structured maturity model to complex, diverse program environments.
- Using assessment results to support internal planning, leadership engagement, and modernization efforts.
- Learning how other jurisdictions have leveraged the model to identify achievable, high impact improvements.
Who should attend:
- Large LHDs: Informatics leaders, epidemiologists, IT staff, and program managers seeking a shared framework to assess complex systems and prioritize infrastructure improvements.
- Small and Medium LHDs: Staff looking for a practical tool to understand current capabilities, clarify priorities, and guide incremental improvements.
- All LHDs: Anyone involved in surveillance, informatics, data systems, or strategic planning.
