As part of the National Association of County and City Health Officials’ (NACCHO’s) work to support and serve 3,000 local health departments (LHDs) in the United States, NACCHO has been releasing a bi-weekly blog consisting of an up-to-date collection of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) resources for our members working at the intersection of environmental health and COVID-19.
Though the timing and duration varies, October often marks the start of influenza (flu) season in the United States. To assist local health departments’ in their preparation and response efforts, NACCHO is pleased to release two resources updated for the 2020-2021 Flu Season: The NACCHO Influenza Webpage and the School-Located Influenza Vaccination (SLIV) Toolkit.
National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) is observed each year on October 15 to increase awareness of the impact of HIV on the Hispanic/Latino population in the United States.
Public Health Reports, a peer-reviewed journal of public health research and practice, has issued a call for papers focused on the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Public health and health policy experts agree it is imperative to identify and address health disparities and health care inequities that historically disadvantaged groups have experienced. However, these efforts often fail to reach and engage marginalized groups and sub-populations with disabilities.
To expand use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), interventions to increase PrEP awareness, should encourage health care providers to discuss PrEP, destigmatize PrEP use, and promote racial/ethnic equity in PrEP access. PrEP is a daily oral pill that reduces the risk for sexual acquisition of HIV by about 99% when taken daily as prescribed.
