    LAACT Action provides prenatal breastfeeding education and lactation consultations for mothers throughout 20 counties in Central & Western Kansas with no cost sharing. Through a 3 year grant awarded by the Kansas Health Foundation, this project provides much needed assistance to mothers in rural settings with otherwise limited access to local support or lactation services.

    Reaching Teen Moms with Breastfeeding Education & Support

    Historically, breastfeeding rates among teens are lower than other subsets of women in the U.S. The decision to breastfeed can seem overwhelming for young parents struggling to balance multiple priorities. Although many organizations work to improve breastfeeding rates, few offer programs tailored to teen moms. TOPS instituted systemic and environmental changes to meet teen needs.

    Cedar County Public Health sought to address the low rate of children who had a record of receiving a dental screening prior to entering kindergarten. We believed this was due to a shortage of dentists in our county as well as the difficulty health officials encountered performing school dental audits.

    School Based Oral Health Program

    Local health departments serve as a clearinghouse to bring oral health services to children in local public schools. Health departments promote the oral health program to schools, and contract with dental providers to ensure that their licensing, background checks and insurance are up to date. Data is collected by the health department and reported back to the schools.

    Oral Health to Enhance “Educational Readiness”

    For over 10 years, the DC Department of Health (DOH) has supported preventive oral health services for school-age children. Increasing tooth decay prevalence among younger children necessitated an early intervention approach. Although the Dental Officer implemented a "perinatal" strategy to decay prevention, the program needed an evaluation plan to measure the effectiveness of these efforts.

    Santa Rosa County McKinney-Vento Program First of Its Kind in Country

    In 2013, the school district and the health department in Santa Rosa County collaborated to secure a grant under the McKinney-Vento (MCV) Act that would fund case management efforts for the district's homeless and disadvantaged youth and their families. It was the first program of its kind in the country.
