Every weekday around noon, local residents, workers, high school students, and visitors to Mariposa County head to the parking areas near the Mariposa History Museum in search of their favorite street food. The local food truck culture attracts people of all ages and walks of life, drawn by the aromas of two taco trucks and a hamburger joint on wheels.
Annually, public health officials prepare for the upcoming influenza (flu) season and emphasize the importance of receiving the flu vaccine. To “lead by example,” NACCHO’s Employee Wellness and Flu Vaccination Initiative aims to promote a culture of total wellness among employees with a particular emphasis on preparing employees for the upcoming flu season.
In business, you don’t sell the competitor’s product; you sell your product – you want to prosper. In the non-profit or public health sector, you work together. What? Smoke-free multi-unit housing benefits residents and property owners. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires every public housing agency to implement a smoke-free policy by July 2018. Local health departments play a key role in working with public housing agencies to prepare, implement, educate, enforce, and evaluate smoke-free housing policies.
How can a local health department respond to an onslaught of vector control (mosquito and rat) complaints? Easy, develop a special revenue fund to wholly fund an integrated pest management program. This self-sustaining funding mechanism allows for a proactive program aimed at minimizing the vector control disease burden.
Using newly-available data on nearly one million children in Colorado, the Colorado Children's Immunization Coalition (CCIC) developed custom fact sheets to help each Senate and House district understand its level of community protection and identify areas for improvement.
