The federal National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free lunches to children at school. Since 1966 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in charge of setting uniform nutritional standards for the NSLP. In 2010, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act required the USDA to update the School Lunch Standards to reflect current dietary science. In 2012, the USDA issued new school lunch standards. The new standards require schools to increase availability of fruits and vegetables, set both a floor and ceiling on meal calories, and sets sodium reduction targets over the next ten years, in addition to several other regulations. This new resources provide an update on the implementation progress of the new school lunch standards, as well as a look at what to expect in 2015.
