The American Indian Healthy Eating Project in partnership with seven American Indian tribes in North Carolina have been working since 2008 on developing planning and policy strategies to improve access to healthy, affordable foods within American Indian communities in North Carolina. This policy toolkit provides technical assistance and tools on areas identified with the most potential to facilitate tribally-led ways within the participating tribes to improve access to healthy, affordable foods. Lessons learned from tribal leaders and key informants built the partnerships and evidence base necessary to focus on and move forward the following approaches: Tribally owned and operated community gardens, Tribally owned and operated farmers markets, Healthy Pow Wow food and beverage options, Healthy tribal store, mobile, & vending initiatives, and Healthy families, healthy food activities.
