NACCHO seeks to incorporate health equity through social justice into its work in a number of ways:

1) NACCHO’s Health Equity and Social Justice Strategic Direction Team, an advisory group of NACCHO members, whose mission is to advance action to attain health equity through social justice; 2) Health Equity and Social Justice Cross-Cutting Team, made up of NACCHO staff members, which seeks to ensure that all of NACCHO’s work advances health equity; and 3) specific projects devoted to advancing health equity in public health practice.  More »

Unnatural Causes: Is Inequity Making Us Sick?

This series, available on DVD in late February, will help viewers explore how inequalities in housing, health, jobs, and education-combined with a lack of power and control over one's life, can translate into bad health and even death. NACCHO has received a supplemental grant from the Ingham County Health Department (ICHD) through the W.K. Kellogg Foundation whereby each of four departments, plus ICHD, would receive direct grants for three years. These funds will be used to implement a process for engaging staff and allocating resources to address the root causes of health inequity. More »

The California Endowment Health Equity Initiative
NACCHO received an one-year grant from the Endowment that began March 1, 2007. The project consists of (a) devising an assessment and dialogue method to advance tackling health inequity in public health practice, similar to that which the Kellogg Foundation is funding, in the Los Angeles County Health Department and Shasta Public Health; (b) generating a list of and criteria for standards of practice for accreditation and basic competencies in achieving health equity, linked to entities that could advance them; (c) collaborating with California Newsreel on its four hour documentary series for PBS titled, “Unnatural  Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” on the root causes of health inequity, scheduled for broadcast in Winter 2008.
