Washington, DC, August 5, 2026 — On behalf of the nation’s over 3,300 local health departments, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) applauds the confirmation of Dr. Erica Schwartz to be the new Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A strong, stable public health system is critical as we address multiple public health challenges today and prepare for those in the future.
CDC is a key federal partner for local health departments. CDC experts help provide scientific guidance, timely and actionable information sharing, useful resources, and critical investments that help local health departments fulfill their mission to the communities they serve.
The nation’s governmental public health system — across the Federal, state, and local level — is a critical and necessary partnership to assure the nation’s health security, one community at a time. NACCHO looks forward to working with Dr. Schwartz and her team, including Mr. Slovenski and Dr. Shuford, who have extensive governmental public health experience, as they work to stabilize and support the important work of CDC.
