On April 21, 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an article in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report with updated pre-pandemic planning guidelines that:
- Replace the 2007 Community Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Mitigation in the United States
- Summarize key lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic response
- Describe new or updated pandemic planning and assessment tools
- Provide the latest scientific findings on the use of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)
State and local public health officials are encouraged to use the 2017 guidelines to plan and prepare for implementing NPIs early in a pandemic.
