Report Highlights How Local Health Departments are Advancing Syndemic Approaches for STIs, HIV, and Hepatitis

Apr 03, 2026

Local health departments (LHDs) across the country are navigating a syndemic of STIs, HIV, and viral hepatitis, often within systems that were not designed to support integrated responses. At the same time, many LHDs are already advancing practical, person-centered strategies that cut across programs, close gaps across the care continuum, and better meet community needs. NACCHO’s new report, Build on What Works: Syndemic Approaches in Local Health Departments, highlights findings from an assessment of LHDs, including real-world examples of how jurisdictions are integrating services, expanding community-based service delivery, leveraging data to inform action, and strengthening partnerships to reach populations most impacted by the syndemic.

The report also outlines persistent barriers, including siloed funding, workforce constraints, and fragmented data systems, while elevating strategies LHDs are using to navigate these challenges and drive innovation. Whether your health department is just beginning to explore a syndemic approach or already implementing integrated models, this resource offers actionable examples and insights to support your work.
