September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and NACCHO recognizes that the local public health workforce—including local health department staff, community and government partners, and advocates—works tirelessly to prevent suicide and build supportive communities year-round. Here are some resources to help promote Suicide Prevention Month in your own communities:

  • Suicide Prevention Month: Ideas for Action (Suicide Prevention Resource Center): This two-page resource offers information to help anyone, anywhere get involved in Suicide Prevention Month in September. It includes tips on how to take action to help prevent suicide in your community, such as learning about effective suicide prevention, sharing stories of hope, and encouraging everyone to be there for those who are struggling.
  • 2025 Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Toolkit (SAMHSA): Copy, download, and share the toolkit’s messages, graphics, and promotional materials in ways that fit the needs of your audiences and channels.
  • Suicide Prevention Month 2025 E-Blasts (Action Alliance): Sign up for a series of e-blasts, the Action Alliance helps equip organizations with the necessary resources, tools, and events to plan for and participate in this important national conversation. This year, our content emphasizes the importance of crafting safe and impactful messages, guided by The Framework for Successful Messaging.

In an effort to support local health department efforts, NACCHO recently released Community-Based Suicide Prevention for Local Health Departments- a free, 4-module online course that aims to help local health departments implement community-based suicide prevention and advance the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Use or create a free MyNACCHO login to access the course here.
