Today, NACCHO released a commentary in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) new report, Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, 2019. The report shows that antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi cause more than 2.8 million infections and 35,000 deaths in the United States each year. That means, on average, someone in the […]
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the 2018 National and State Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) Progress Report, a snapshot of how each state and the country are doing in eliminating HAIs, showing significant progress nationally in reducing several hospital-acquired infections and highlighting that prevention of these infections is possible. When a novel or targeted multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO) or resistance mechanism is identified, local public health must act quickly to prevent its spread, implementing CDC’s Containment Strategy.
Earlier this week, the United States celebrated the success of The AMR Challenge during the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Launched in September 2018, the Challenge received nearly 350 commitments from 33 countries to implement specific actions to combat antibiotic resistance (also known as antimicrobial resistance or AMR).
NACCHO is pleased to announce the release of two fact sheets highlighting the role of local health departments (LHDs) in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and supporting antimicrobial stewardship.

Combating antimicrobial resistance, through implementing antimicrobial stewardship practices, is an important component of protecting patient safety which can save time, money, and lives. As conveners and chief health...

PulseNet, the national network of laboratories that detects outbreaks of foodborne […]
In 2011, Sepsis Alliance designated September as Sepsis Awareness Month. Over the last eight years, this health observance has increased sepsis awareness in the United States from 42% to 65%. Despite these great strides, sepsis remains a public health crisis, taking a life every two minutes. Sepsis takes more lives than opioid overdoses, breast cancer, and prostate […]
As issues with drug resistant pathogens have emerged across the country, local health departments (LHDs) have been called on to lead and support the containment of novel or targeted multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). To explore this role, NACCHO hosted a webinar to share the experiences of three LHDs who have been affected by containment events. Learning […]
