May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time of celebration that recognizes the many historical and cultural contributions to the United States by individuals and groups of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander descent.
Although the emergent time of the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, the work in BIPOC communities continues due to the low vaccination rates and continued health disparities. It will take time to clear the lens to have equity for all.
As we wrap up National Public Health Week (April 3-9, 2023), I want to take a moment to say thank you and reflect on the important work done by the thousands of individuals who serve in local health departments. Thank you for all you do for your communities, but also for the nation as a whole. In my remarks below, I explain the importance of local public health.
