In the present moment, and mere days before World Environmental Health Day on September 26, the intersection between climate change and preparedness is, sadly, quite clear. It is truly an honor to serve as NACCHO President during the 2020–2021 term despite the fact that these are the most demanding, turbulent and stressful times for local public health.
On August 25-27, 2020, more than 1,300 attendees—who work in all levels of government (local, state, and federal), emergency management, volunteer organizations, healthcare coalitions, and academia—participated in the first ever virtual Preparedness Summit.
As we continue to self-evaluate our personal and professional relationship with race as public health practitioners, So You Want to Talk About Race, is a great opportunity to delve into how to apply antiracism to everyday situations.
Public health and health policy experts agree it is imperative to identify and address health disparities and health care inequities that historically disadvantaged groups have experienced. However, these efforts often fail to reach and engage marginalized groups and sub-populations with disabilities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Vital Statistics System, the 2018 maternal mortality rate was 17.4 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, placing the United States significantly behind other developed countries.
On July 7–9, 2020, approximately 600 local public health professionals participated in NACCHO’s first ever virtual conference, NACCHO 360. Attendees participated in nearly 100 sharing sessions, learned from expert-led panels, and discovered solutions to improve public health in their communities.
