Respiratory Viruses

Annually, respiratory diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV present a substantial burden to the health of individuals across the United States. It is estimated that influenza results in 9.4 to 51 million illnesses, COVID-19 results in 3.8-12.4 million illnesses, and RSV results in 2.8-5.8 million outpatient visits (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2026). These illnesses lead to many hospitalizations and deaths each year. Vaccination is highly recommended as a safe and effective preventive measure.

Local health departments (LHD) play an important role in protecting communities from respiratory viruses. LHDs are on the frontlines in providing education and outreach, administering vaccinations, and coordinating resources to prepare for the threat of a pandemic respiratory emergency.

NACCHO is strengthening LHD capacity to control and prevent the spread of respiratory viruses by creating learning opportunities, providing technical support and resources, and facilitating peer exchange. In addition to the below resources, visit the NACCHO Toolbox to access more respiratory resources that have been shared with NACCHO by LHDs.
