||Incresing signage for compliance with the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act
|| Fishbone Diagram, PDCA,
|Description of the process and intervention:
||We started with baseline data of county regulated businesses that by state law, must advertise No Tobbaco Use within 25 feet of business for compliance with the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act. By fishbone diagram we were able to identify the causes that contributed to lack of signage. Identified were lack of knowledge regarding the law, lack of signs, lack of willingness to post signs. DCHD developd an educational intervention to educate facilities identified with lack of knowledge. DCHD obtained signage to supply to facilities in need. Process was evaluated at monthly intervals. Time was dedicated after educational intervention and signage delivered to enable regulated facilities to come in to compliance. Regulated facility inspections by environmental health inspectors began and were able to measure which facilities came into compliance. DCHD used the fishbone diagram and PDCA to enable a successful intervention.
||DCHD was able to increase signage and compliance of county regulated agencies from a baseline of 40% to 80%.
||To increase knowledge of business owners requiring compliance with the UICAA, education and signs will be provided by all cities in the county that get new business licenses. Environmental Health inspectors will continue to make annual inspections of all regulated facilities for compliance. The Tobacco Program will follow-up with businesses not in compliance. In time, fees may be enacted by regulation for continued non-compliance.
