Disaster Preparedness Guide for Caregivers

Feb 28, 2024

In the United States, 53 million are caring for someone older, ill, or disabled. In many cases, they are the only one attending to the daily needs of an elderly parent, disabled neighbor, or medically complex child. To help caregivers navigate the unique challenges that may arise when disasters strike, FEMA and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers (RCI) created the “Disaster Preparedness Guide for Caregivers.”

The guide helps caregivers to learn about disaster preparedness and identify the needs of care recipients and how they might change during a disaster. This guide also answers questions about preparedness, shares ways to connect with the community, and bolsters the confidence of caregivers during a disaster.

FEMA and RCI are hosting a webinar on Thursday, March 7, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM ET, for caregivers and communities to introduce the guide and provide an opportunity to learn how the guide addresses the unique challenges faced by caregivers and offers practical solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of both caregivers and care recipients in the event of a disaster.
