Celebrating Two Decades of Service! NACCHO releases the 2022 Network Profile of the Medical Reserve Corps

Nov 21, 2023 | Laura Biesiadecki

This new report shows that while Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers contributed over 1.1 million hours of service across the country, funding is still a key priority with a need to strengthen community partnerships. Standing on its 20th year of service, MRC volunteers have responded to communities amidst a range of emerging threats from COVID-19, the opioid epidemic, responding to an active shooter, hurricane Fiona, and severe weather in California, to name a few. MRC units dedicated a total of 1,114,618 volunteer hours to emergency and non-emergency activities with 603,587 hours to COVID-19 in 2022 – equating to an economic value of over $35 million.

This report provides a snapshot of the MRC network in 2022, including the newest data on unit demographics, funding, training, partnerships, response activities, and capabilities. With 70% of MRC units housed in local health departments, MRC volunteers are a vital resource for health departments to fulfill their mission in creating healthier, more resilient communities.

This new report shows that while Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers contributed over 1.1 million hours of service across the country, funding is still a key priority with a need to strengthen community partnerships.

The Medical Reserve Corps is the volunteer organization active in disasters serving communities across the nation from urban, suburban, rural, to tribal and frontier, responding to emergencies and disasters. The skills, training, situational readiness, community engagement, and mix of MRC volunteers afforded a clear advantage to communities by providing a ready surge workforce structure. This report sheds light on the makeup of that workforce locally, as well as the needs, challenges, and successes of the network. View the report at MRC-Network-Profile and press release here.
