- Screening recommendations
“The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released today a final recommendation statement on screening for syphilis infection in nonpregnant adolescents and adults. The Task Force recommends screening people at increased risk for infection. To view the recommendation, the evidence on which it is based, and a summary for clinicians, please go here. The final recommendation statement can also be found in the September 27 online issue of JAMA.
NCHSM has relaunched their guide, ” Take Charge of Your Sexual Health: What you need to know about preventive services.” Both the English and Spanish guides have been updated to be more inclusive of all gender identities.
CDC Monkeypox Considerations for Sexual Health Services
“The features of early monkeypox cases can be confused with other STIs, such as syphilis and herpes. It is important to comprehensively evaluate patients presenting with genital or perianal ulcers for STIs per the 2021 CDC STI Treatment Guidelines, as well as for monkeypox. Co-infection with monkeypox and STIs is common, with 41% of persons diagnosed with monkeypox reporting an STI in the prior year, and 38% having HIV at the time of monkeypox diagnosis. The presence of an STI does not rule out the potential for co-occurring monkeypox virus infection. Patients with a new rash or lesion, especially those who meet one or more of the epidemiologic criteria should be tested for monkeypox. Additional clinical information about monkeypox, including clinician FAQs, may be found on the CDC website.
As we work to prevent and control monkeypox, we have an opportunity to provide STI and HIV screening to populations who can most benefit from it. We can leverage that opportunity to provide routine STI screening, including HIV testing, and refer eligible patients to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), or link people with HIV to HIV care and treatment. We cannot afford to miss the opportunity to provide holistic care to people affected by monkeypox as we know they may be disproportionately affected by other health conditions. CDC, HRSA, and SAMHSA have provided flexibility with many of their cooperative agreements that allows resources to be used to support monkeypox-related work when conducted in conjunction with provision of other services.”

Upcoming Opportunities
NACCHO Harm Reduction Funding Opportunity
With support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NACCHO is pleased to offer a funding opportunity for health departments or government, nonprofit, academic, or other organizations to develop key messages on harm reduction that can be delivered through academic detailing. Through this project, selected sites will identify a novel population that has not received academic detailing on harm reduction in their jurisdiction, develop specific key messages for this population, and pilot the key messages. The novel population should be a population of the sites’ choosing and is not limited to those within the medical profession; sites can choose to provide academic detailing on any population of their choosing (emergency room physicians, social workers, EMS, etc.).
Through this funding opportunity, NACCHO and CDC will award up to six (6) applicants, for up to $60,000 per site.
Application Submission: Please submit all applications and supporting materials using the online submission form. Please note that you will need to create a free MyNACCHO account to access the form.
For full details about the funding opportunity, please review the Request for Applications. Questions about the RFA and application process can be directed to Audrey Eisemann, Sr. Program Analyst at NACCHO ([email protected]).

DoxyPEP: Data, Implications, and a Way forward Webinar
When: Nov 15, 2022, 01:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Topic: DoxyPEP: Data, Implications, and a Way forward
To address the increased burden of STIs, the use of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP) has been recently considered to combat the epidemic through the NIH-funded Doxy-PEP study. It is through the study that Doxy-PEP proved to be successful in preventing bacterial STIs amongst individuals at an increased risk for repeated STI acquisition. Join NACCHO on Tuesday, November 15th at 1pm EST to take a deeper look into the Doxy-PEP study as Dr. Julie Dombrowski, a co-investigator of the study who also helps run Public Health — Seattle & King County’s HIV/STD program, will discuss the data and findings from the study, as well as how this impacts the future of public health.
