On May 15, CDC released a new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) entitled High Prevalence of Hepatitis C Infection Among Adult Patients at Four Urban Emergency Departments — Birmingham, Oakland, Baltimore, and Boston, 2015–2017. The report details the results of opt-out, universal hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening in emergency departments in four U.S. cities. The findings indicate that these screening practices can identify a significant number of previously undiagnosed cases, particularly among people born after 1965.
