A NACCHO-funded pilot program in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania expanded testing and treatment access points to county residents for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through community pharmacies. This program involves providing self-collection STI test kits for chlamydia and gonorrhea to county residents, allowing individuals to receive their own test results electronically, and partnerships with pharmacies so that those with positive results can go directly to their local pharmacy for treatment. The program successfully increased flexibility and convenience of these services and addresses patient concerns such as privacy and after-hours access to care. University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy pharmacists and student pharmacists collaborated with the Allegheny County Health Department and Hilltop Pharmacy to co-develop this toolkit that aims to assist community pharmacists across the country with replication of this pilot program in their own pharmacies.
Toolkit readers are invited to explore the appendices provided in the toolkit. These offer ready-to-use resources for your upcoming partnerships such as: (1) sample standing orders; (2) sample pharmacy STI treatment intake form; (3) patient education materials; and (4) a pharmacy supply list.
