The new report, Ready or Not 2026: Protecting the Public’s Health from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism, released by Trust for America’s (TFAH) evaluates the nation’s readiness for public health emergencies through 10 indicators of state preparedness, including healthcare workforce mobility, state public health funding, laboratory surge planning, access to paid sick leave, and community water system safety. The report provides benchmarks and recommendations to help federal, state, and local policymakers and public health leaders strengthen emergency readiness.
In this year’s report, 20 states placed in the high-performance tier, while 17 states and the District of Columbia placed in the middle tier, and 13 states placed in the low tier. The report also makes clear that all states have opportunities to strengthen their readiness.
