Last week, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the first cases of a concerning new gonorrhea strain. The new strain shows reduced response to multiple antibiotics and another case was also found that had genetic markers that indicate a similar drug response. In November, the HIV, STI, Viral Hepatitis, and Harm Reduction Workgroup (HSHW) met in person, with representatives from CDC to share LHD experiences in the HIV, STI, and Harm Reduction spaces, hear of CDC priorities, and strategize together on advancing program successes and addressing program challenges.

In partnership with the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), NACCHO will provide up to 5 local health departments with $15,000-$75,000 each for a demonstration project to conduct routine, opt-out syphilis screening of women and other individuals of childbearing capacity housed in local jails.
