NACCHO is pleased to announce two new funding opportunities to decrease syphilis via community engagement. Both opportunities focus on engaging community members to develop, or tailor, a plan to decrease syphilis burden in the local community.
On January 20th, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published new analysis on substance use among persons with syphilis during pregnancy.
Last week, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the first cases of a concerning new gonorrhea strain. The new strain shows reduced response to multiple antibiotics and another case was also found that had genetic markers that indicate a similar drug response. The clinical alert from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health can be found here.
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) hosted a virtual consultation, “STI Post-Exposure Prophylaxis with Doxycycline” on December 5th and December 6th, 2022. This meeting was convened by NACCHO with the support of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) and the National Network of STD Clinical Prevention Training Centers (NNPTCs).
NACCHO is launching the Congenital Syphilis Community of Practice (CoP), to engage health department staff in collaborative learning and knowledge-sharing activities that enhance their capacity to implement or scale-up interventions to address CS and syphilis among individuals of child-bearing capacity.
The CDC released Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Treatment Guidelines, 2021, which provide current evidence-based diagnostic, management, and treatment recommendations and replace the previous 2015 guidance.
On March 24, 2021, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine released their report, “STIs: Adopting a Sexual Health Paradigm.” The report includes all levels of US society and healthcare system to identify recommendations to improve the national approach to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
NACCHO will fund up to 4 local health departments (LHDs) up to $100,000 each to implement pharyngeal gonorrhea test of cure. This implementation will provide essential information about the feasibility of implementing TOC for all pharyngeal gonorrhea cases in clinical practice.
In partnership with the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, NACCHO will provide up to four local health departments with up to $25,000 each to implement and evaluate a program strategy that will improve congenital syphilis in their area. Learn how to apply.
