Webinar Title: Outbreaks in Carceral Settings: What LHDs Should do to Prepare and Respond

Meeting date: June 17, 2026, from 3:00 – 4:00 PM ET

Target audience: Local health department staff (particularly those in epi, communicable disease, or related fields)

Overview

Outbreaks in prisons, jails, and detention centers present unique challenges, and for local health department (LHD) staff supporting the response, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.

In this session, two experts will share practical guidance for navigating these complex settings.

  • Dr. Homer Venters, author of Outbreak Behind Bars, will draw on lessons learned from outbreaks in carceral settings to outline steps LHDs can take to proactively connect with facilities in their jurisdiction, assessing infection prevention strategies and building relationships before an outbreak occurs.

  • Liesl Hagan, MPH, Senior Scientist for Correctional Health at CDC, will present CDC’s Preparing and Responding to Measles: Checklist for Correctional Facilities and other tools designed to support both outbreak prevention and response in these settings.
