By Victoria O’Halloran, Former NACCHO Intern Local health departments are at the forefront of preparing for and responding to public health emergencies. When these events occur, local health departments work alongside local and national partners to ensure the health and safety of their communities.
In October 2018, NACCHO, along with the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), and the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) began a collaborative project to address lead poisoning using a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach, informally referred to as the HiAP + Lead Collaborative.
On October 8, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Surveillance Report, 2018. Devastatingly, rates of reportable STDs, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, surged for the fifth year in a row.
This year, NACCHO has awarded scholarships to 4 disease intervention specialists (DIS) from local health departments to join us in the Washington, DC area and participate in the STD Engage conference in November 2019.
